The inaugural Islington Festival of Music and Arts, which will take place at the end of July, in celebration of music and the arts in Islington, North London. We were inspired by the enormous happiness and energy that many Londoners demonstrated last year when we organised a series of chamber music concerts in private gardens and outside spaces in our local neighbourhood. We have spent the long winter months beavering away to present this 4-Day Festival of wonderful music for you to enjoy, and a few other events too!
We are proud to announce that we are presenting 15 events during the 4 days, including 11 concerts in beautiful and inspiring buildings throughout the Borough of Islington.
There are 3 Series of concerts, always at the same time each day: The Lunchtime Series will take place in Islington Square, the site of the former post sorting office, which has been transformed into a retail and residential area.
The 3 concerts will take place in the South Arcade: Ensemble ÉMIGRÉ with much-loved songs from the era of Vera Lynn and Marlene Dietrich, violin favourite salon pieces, and a flute and piano duo, with traditional jazz standards.
The Evening Concert Series is in Christ Church Highbury, close by the beautiful Highbury Fields. These 4 concerts showcase the chamber music of Franz Schubert, and every concert will have one of his famous works: The Trout and Cello Quintet frame the Series, and you can also hear his intimate Fantasie for Piano 4 Hands, the Arpeggione Sonata and a selection of songs from “Die schöne Müllerin”. Alongside Schubert are several of the 19th century's major composers: Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mahler and Schumann. Also, you will have the chance to hear a rarely-performed quintet by Adolph Blanc; there’s a rarity!
The Late Night Bach Series will be shared between the Newington Green Meeting House, No 20 Arts, and The Old Queens Head pub. The Meeting House has recently undergone major renovation and refurbishment thanks to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and is now an amazing building with a fantastic acoustic too! No 20 Arts is a beautiful contemporary art gallery, and The Old Queen’s Head is a famous landmark building in Islington, which regularly hosts concerts and other events. These 4 concerts are exclusively devoted to the works of J.S. Bach, and include solo violin, lute music, and 3 of the outstanding choral Motets. There are 3 Workshops during the Festival, all taking place at the Meeting House. For string players, there is the opportunity to learn and experience the world of the Luthier. There will be 2 Drawing Classes: Figurative or Abstract Drawings Inspired by Music.
On the final afternoon of the Festival, there will be an Art Market in the gardens of Christ Church Highbury. We have invited talented local artists and artisans to display their crafts and products in a wide range of stalls, enhancing the traditional and local feel of the Festival.
All the performers, instrumentalists and singers are desperate to perform again, to create live music for a real public, and not just another streaming event! We hope you agree: come and join us for this opportunity to listen to splendid music performed by top-class musicians. We look forward to welcoming you to all of the concerts and other events in July, where it will be a pleasure to share our music-making with you.
