The Wild Child

83 mins

in French with EN subs

FRA | 1970 | dir. François Truffaut, with Jean-Pierre Cargol, François Truffaut, Jean Dasté, Françoise Seigner

Based on a true story of a “wild child” found in the forest in the late 18th century, L’Enfant sauvage relates the efforts of behavioural scientist Jean Itard to “civilise” the child. Truffaut’s marvelous recreation of a scientist’s attempts to educate a feral child in 1790s France is a deeply moving drama. This astute philosophical meditation on matters of morality, humanity, responsibility and ‘civilisation’, benefits from Nestor Almendros’ stunning black-and-white camerawork and superb performances from Cargol and Truffaut.
