UK's Best Family Venue? Find out more about the National Maritime Museum
Fantasic For Families

The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, is one of five family-friendly places that have been shortlisted for this year's Best Family Venue Award in our annual Fantastic for Families Awards. Families are central to the Museum and between the on-site events and activities, and the digital offer, there is sure to be something to entertain the whole family. The National Maritime Museum welcomes families with children of all ages and abilities. For under 5s and their parents/carers, Play Tuesdays encourages bonding within the family unit, an opportunity to meet other early years families, and creative engagement with the museum objects through stories, music and sensory play. For children of all ages and abilities, Discover Sundays and school holiday workshops provide the opportunity to engage with the collection through arts activities as a family. Delivered by artists, children have the chance to explore a variety of art forms and to discover stories of exploration and encounter within the museum. For children aged 14+, the Youth Programme encourages engagement with and contribution to the Museum. From Saturday Art Club and the Youth Collective to youth-led late events, work experience and creative half term projects, young people are given the space to develop new skills and grow in confidence.

Throughout the year a number of family festivals, including Chinese New Year and Diwali, encourage families to encounter other cultures and to celebrate with the Museum and their local community. Watch amazing performances, participate in celebratory crafts and explore objects in the collection with connections to China and India.

Every day families can pick up a trail to help guide their journey through the galleries. Learn to ‘Survive’ in Polar Worlds, ‘Encounter’ the Pacific, ‘Discover’ the Sea Things gallery and so much more! Trails are suited for Mini Mariners all the way up to Courageous Captains.

Look out for skills development courses run by experts. From photography to animation, to comic book art, spend the day learning secret skills from the best in the business and give it a go yourself.

Online, families can discover a whole host of creative activities to encourage creativity, imagination and curiosity in the world around them. Visit their Family Activities page to find everything from Deep Sea Dancing with Drag Queen ShayShay, to creating a ship in a bottle inspired by Yinka Shonibare’s Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle. These activities will help you explore objects and people in the Museum from home!

Keep an eye out for new programmes launching this Autumn as the team work to provide more relevant and supportive activities online and in the Museum for all members of the family.
