Fantasic For Families

AsOne Theatre Company has made this year's shortlist for our Best Family Event Award for their Library Live! tour, where they brought family theatre into local libraries for free. Here they tell us all about the shows you'll be able to see and when they'll be back with more.

Library Live! is an intimate, participatory & diverse project bringing free live theatre to children in their local library. We created it to encourage families to explore their local library as well as inspire young children to share in their first experiences of reading.

AsOne Theatre is a not for profit company providing first-time magical theatre experiences for children. Library Live!, providing family-friendly entertainment across the generations, was a natural development on from our existing theatre projects.

So far, we've created (with our playwright Peter John Cooper) three original plays specially written to be performed to families in libraries, with lots of audience interaction too.

“Very enjoyable, perfect length, great performers, great set, brilliant idea”

Our first play, The Fisherman’s Daughter, see's Jess, a young girl who is inspired to read by a redundant librarian and her friend (puppet) Harold the one-legged seagull. It's a fun story but also a multi-layered one, offering something for both young and old, toddlers through to grandmas and grandads.

Our second play, Jess’s Odyssey, is a companion play, which follows Jess’s journey as she makes new friends and her confidence grows.

The audience are a vital part of all of our plays, with participatory jokes throughout. Performances are limited to around 45 minutes to allow time for questions to Harold the puppet.

“We felt we were taken back in time”.

Here's a clip from Mary Anning’s Fossil Depot -  an interactive play about the famous fossil hunter. During this one, children are able to handle real fossils, complementing areas of the Key Stage 1 and 2 school syllabus, and use fossil hunting tools to piece together a complete plesiosaur skeleton. These creative activities always proves popular with the children, parents, and librarians and add an extra interactive element to the performance.

The best thing about creating theatre for families is the joy on the faces of the audiences at each of the libraries we visit. We've missed performing to families during the Covid-19 pandemic but we will be back as soon as it's safe to do so. You can check our website for updates to the latest production at your nearest library in 2021. You can also follow us on Facebook or Twitter and check out our YouTube channel for some clips of our existing shows.

What now? Find events near you, online-events, or activities to do at home with kids.
