The Little Prince by Luca Silvestrini’s Protein
- 31 July 2020
Luca Silvestrini’s Protein has made this year's shortlist for our Best Family Event Award for their popular family show The Little Prince. Here they tell us more about how they put this family-friendly favourite together.
Based on the world-famous story by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince is brought to life using Protein’s award-winning mix of dance, humour and spoken word. Protein’s new show invites us to look at the world through one’s heart and to reconnect with our inner child.
Protein is one of the most distinctive voices in British dance theatre, Artistic Director and founder Luca Silvestrini has been using a blend of original dance and music to entertain audiences since 1998.
The Little Prince is aimed at families and suitable for people of all ages, from 3 through to 93. You can also enjoy creative activities before and after the show, colouring sheets for original costume designs, and origami stars. The experience can be extended at home by reading the original book, which we always have on sale at our shows.
“It really was extraordinary! Incredible costume, dance, song, acting, casting, lighting, props, characterisation and script. It really has it all. There were people in tears coming out mesmerised.” - Audience member
“The Little Prince comes from the desire of convening the whole family around a significant and iconic story for everyone; this nomination is the best validation of all our creative and touring efforts. I take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the production and Fantastic for Families for their consideration”. - Luca Silvestrini, Founder and Artistic Director of PROTEIN
We're thrilled that the show has been recognised as an excellent opportunity for families to experience professional dance in a relaxed setting. We worked hard to create something brand new and original from this classic story, with an original musical score by our composer Frank Moon, new stage and costume designs, lighting design and even use of video.
So far, we've toured the UK and been to China. We've also adapted the show so that we can bring it into smaller venues such as village halls, local libraries or family-friendly festivals. We can't wait to begin discovering more new settings again next year!
Plus, as well as our programme of performances, we run a series of participatory projects where young and old can take part. We'll be back with these as soon as we can.
The Little Prince will be touring again in 2021! Sign up to our mailing list to be informed when we visit a town near you. You can also follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
