Welcome to the New Year! The Christmas decorations have (mostly) come down, but the weather is still chilly and blue skies are rare. It seems like the perfect time to cocoon at home and hibernate… if it wasn’t for some brilliantly brave event organisers who are putting on outdoor events!

We all need our vitamin D and going outside is good for your mental health too. So we picked out some creative outdoor activities for you and your family that will encourage everyone to get out and about, enjoy the fresh air, be inspired and even embrace mud! As the saying goes - there is no bad weather, just wrong clothes.

Let us know what you have discovered by tagging #FantasticForFamilies on Facebook, Instagram or twitter.

1) Outdoor Art Club

Outdoor Art Club invites you to workshops that bring art, nature and creativity together, taking place come rain or shine. There are all the favourites… you and your family can splash about in water, make yukky potions in the mud kitchen and paint with mud in the Whitworth’s giant mud studio.

Weather advice: This takes place outdoors whatever the weather! Wrap up warm and wear wellies and put the little ones in an all-in-one puddle suit. If you don't have a puddle suit then there are plenty available to borrow from the gallery so just ask a member of staff when you arrive. Grown ups will need sturdy footwear and clothes they don't mind getting a bit muddy.

Where? Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester

When? 14 January, 22 January, 11 February; 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM each day

What ages is this recommended for? 0-12 years

How much? Free!

2) Snowdrop Sundays

Visit Chawton House’s Gardens on special Snowdrop Sundays and enjoy the grounds carpeted with hundreds of snowdrops.

A symbol of hope, snowdrops signal that spring is just around the corner and the dark, cold days of winter are soon to disappear. Spot the snowdrops on the South Lawn and in the Wilderness, explore the Walled Garden, and enjoy refreshments from the Old Kitchen Tearoom.

With special snowdrop tours running throughout the day and a snowdrop-themed activity trail for kids, this is the perfect opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the first signs of spring.

Where? Chawton House, Alton

When? 13 & 20 February; 10 AM - 3.30 PM each day

What ages is this recommended for? 3-11 years

How much? £0.00 - £15.00

3) February Half Term at Waddesdon

Wrap up warm and explore the grounds at Waddesdon. Take in the fresh air and take part in the outdoor Birds & Beasts-themed animal trail together. From poodles to parrots, discover the unusual creatures the Waddesdon Rothschild family cared for and complete the trail to claim your souvenir!

Children can also enjoy the Woodland Playground winding through the trees. For adults and older kids, there is the beautiful scenery (Why not bring a sketch pad?) and the food-to-go outlets where you can tuck into something delicious and enjoy homemade refreshments.

Where? Waddesdon Manor, Aylesbury

When? 19 - 27 February; 10 AM - 4 PM each day

What ages is this recommended for? 0-16 years, age-friendly

How much? Normal grounds admission applies (there are discounts for National Trust members). The trail costs £3.50.

Accessibility: There is a 20-25 minute walk from the free visitor car park to the Manor and gardens, with a steep uphill section that may not be suitable for pushchairs or buggies. To avoid the hill, you can book shuttle bus tickets or Premium parking.
