As part of the City and County of Swansea, our partners and funders are vital for the future success of the gallery, and we are grateful for the generous support of the Arts Council of Wales, the Welsh Government, CyMAL and the Heritage Lottery Fund, and also the Friends of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, who help our work in so many different ways. We work in collaboration with many galleries in Wales and the UK, including Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales amongst others, and, of course, Plus Tate which brings such strong advocacy for our work in the visual arts in Wales and throughout the world; and above all, we are committed to the many local artists, colleagues, galleries and organisations who have offered their support during our long journey towards providing a redeveloped gallery for the city.

The gallery redevelopment brings tangible benefits to our local economy, the gallery will be a cultural hub for the city's regeneration. In acquiring grants for the project, we have already created a large number of jobs within the city's construction industry. In our future work, we will continue to support artists and businesses in the city, while contributing to tourism as a flagship gallery for the city at home and abroad. At the same time, we will also be working in often unseen ways, to combat poverty, unemployment and social exclusion faced by so many people, especially young people, living in Swansea.

Our learning and engagement programme is integral to our work, meeting the needs of diverse audiences across the city with an open, engaging and transformative approach to participation. We continue to engage in outreach and audience development initiatives, steadily increasing participation for both existing and new audiences from a range of diverse backgrounds and cultures, including a sharp focus on anti-poverty initiatives in our inner city areas.

Our exhibitions programme in recent years has also been dynamic, distinguished by artists in Wales as well as from elsewhere. Notable projects include work by Shimabuku, Mark Wallinger, Laura Ford, Bedwyr Williams, Contemporary Art from Colombia, Tim Davies, and our recent city-wide exhibition between artists from Swansea and Xiamen in China.

Founded in 1911 by the original bequest of Richard Glynn Vivian (1835-1910), the gallery belongs to the City and County of Swansea, and houses a distinctive collection formed over the last century, which continues to grow with new work from today's artists, supported by gifts, donations and the annual Wakelin Award.

In the light of our redevelopment the gallery's vision is to engage more meaningfully with our communities, creating a new, inspiring and exciting experience. Working with a new thematic synergy between our exhibitions, collections and learning programmes, we are seeking to engage with the widest audiences possible, offsite and onsite, to contribute to the social wellbeing of our communities, to support the future regeneration of our city and to raise the profile of Swansea.

Glynn Vivian Art Gallery aims to inspire people through experience and enjoyment of art, past and present, encouraging engagement through the many creative opportunities presented by our programme, in order to explore today's culture with forward-looking values, and to enrich and support the future regeneration of our city.

Transformation is a thread which runs throughout our work at the gallery and our support for the visual arts in today's local and global context.

We hope to welcome you back to the Gallery again soon.Glynn Vivian

Many of these changes are already in place or are currently being developed by the team, and we will shortly launch with the Garden Room (a new dedicated information and resource space), a new dedicated website, new exhibition banners and signage, together with a series of learning exhibitions in our Room 1 space.

Respondents were also asked what, if anything, the Glynn Vivian should change. These responses included: display more of the collection and local artists, show art created in the workshops, improve signage, and give the Gallery a dedicated website.

Respondents were asked what is special about the Glynn Vivian and the responses included the building, its history, the quality of curation and loans, the calm atmosphere, the family friendly learning programme, the mix of contemporary and historical art, the friendly staff and the connection and importance to Swansea.

  • 92% of respondents plan to visit the Gallery in the next 12 months
  • 77% of respondents said the building is welcoming
  • 78% of respondents say the historical context and story of RGV enhance the experience

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our recent visitor experience survey. We truly value your feedback, which will help us to develop new exhibitions, learning and collection programmes, alongside further develop the existing Glynn Vivian experience. Results show that:
