Gala Theatre and Cinema
The centrepiece of Durham’s cultural offer, Gala Theatre is situated in a beautiful, purpose-built £15m building on the banks of the river Wear in the heart of this historic city.
Whether you are interested in watching drama from one of the country’s leading theatre companies, laughing along to some of the biggest names in comedy, seeing some inspiring bands and musicians, or treating the children to an engaging theatre show, you’ll experience the very best in entertainment and culture at our venue.
As well as presenting some of the very best touring work on the live circuit, we are also home to Durham Book Festival, the TakeOff Festival of theatre for children and young people, and Durham’s annual international BRASS festival.
We are also proud that Gala Theatre is a place where we create our own great theatre work, including our critically acclaimed annual pantomime, and support artists and young people to develop and grow.
With a strong network of connections with the regional creative community, we are a place where actors, designers, musicians and technical staff come together to flourish and thrive. And through our artist development schemes, and Gala Theatre Stage School, we help support those taking their first steps in the industry.
Everyone is different, and everyone is welcome at Gala Theatre. We try hard to ensure that the facilities at Gala Theatre are accessible to all.
So, Gala Theatre has lifts to all levels and accessible toilets located throughout. Our Main Auditorium and both cinemas have wheelchair spaces available. If using a wheelchair, please just advise the Box Office when booking to ensure your seats/spaces are allocated accordingly. We ask that our wheelchair-using patrons attend with an able-bodied companion whose ticket is free of charge.
Guide Dogs are welcome in all parts of the theatre.
We operate the Sennheiser infrared amplification system in our Main Auditorium. Headsets for the hard of hearing are available at Box Office.
Our café staff are trained to be aware of the needs of breast-feeding mothers, and we also have baby changing facilities on all levels.
We have also begun to host relaxed performances of select shows, designed to welcome audiences who might otherwise feel excluded from live theatre. With a relaxed performance, we aim to create a less formal, more supportive environment. Audiences are free to talk or move around if they need to, and a ‘chill out’ space is available for anyone who needs a break. Lighting, sound and special effects are slightly altered in order to reduce anxiety levels, but the production remains the same as much as possible. Staff are trained to create a friendly setting and assist with an additional needs our patrons may have. For those interested in attending a relaxed performance, a venue guide can be found online.
For any access enquiries, please contact 03000 266 600, and if you need any assistance while in Gala Theatre, our staff will be pleased to help.
